Your first Panchakarma: what actually happens
A plain-language guide to preparation, main procedures and recovery — and how to spot spa packages that are not classical care.
28 May 2026
Panchakarma is often marketed as a luxury detox. Classically, it is a supervised sequence: prepare the body, perform selected purification procedures, then rebuild with diet and rest. Not every person receives every “five” procedure.
The arc in simple stages
Preparation uses oleation and heat so channels are ready. Main procedures (such as Virechana or Basti) are chosen from your prakṛti and disease picture. Recovery diet (samsarjana) is as important as the procedure day itself.
How to choose a centre
- Is a qualified Ayurvedic physician designing and supervising the plan?
- Are contraindications screened (pregnancy, severe weakness, unstable disease)?
- Is rest actually scheduled — or is it sold as a lunch-break cleanse?
Working professionals can sometimes use tailored schedules, but deep programmes still need recovery space. Honest clinics will say no when a package is a bad fit.
